Musings on The Muse by Julian Shah-Tayler

Welcome to the sporadic and not entirely well considered spewing forth from my pen. Love to you!

All That Could Have Been

I am in the process of working it all out. The last two songs I have put together are definitely clever: The Anatomy of Desire and All That Could Have Been, but I am a little skeptical that they are my very best. I think I am getting consumed by the idea of challenging myself as a producer and forgetting the songwriting aspects that I generally do best at.
I am very keen to get a couple of videos done.
We are doing one for Adamandevil - Outnumbered with some very talented director types.
I am, however missing playing live very much.
I should get myself a band together very soon to play old and new songs.

force of will

So I got free breakfast today at starbucks because I willed it to happen... This happened many times before, especially when I am ridiculously impecunious.... With MIA at palms in Kensington, and in the sainsbury's in angel... I think I should explore the most focussed thought more meticulously.

Rooftop party

There is something to be said for supporting your friends' endeavours, so I am playing two shows (Adamandevil and Shah) on the roof of 725 Spring Street, downtown LA on saturday. A&E are on around 7 and I am on around 9.30
Should be a lot of fun, and all of my friends' bands are playing. There will be a new bass player augmenting the lineup so as to avoid the until now totally necessary backing tracks. I have every faith that things can't help but get better from now on with the whole project.
Hope that it is good. Then, monday is back to London for a brief visit (2 weeks) to catch up and do things that I have not done for years and years, such as see old friends.... Not that I don't love my new friends.... ;)

six flags

So rollercoasters all pretty much do the smae thing. Up and down, upside down. Call me boring or old, I still prefer the horizontal rollercoaster! Can use harnesses if required... ;)

Covers

Anyway, tomorrow morning, I will be collecting my piano from the shop, and finishing off the last part of my website, and sending off the albums:
Style Or Content, Paper Flower Cuts, Perfectly Fabulous Creations, and the Service With a Snarl e.p. ready for release in april, may this year to coincide with the Shah record, and a new release for Manifesto on Danny Saber's compilation. Awesome.
Also bought my ticket for London on the 16th of march.
That will be fun, at least. Better be, as I am completely out of cash now!

Whitey

Oh Nathan, why don't you tell me when you are releasing another one of the songs I played on?
It will be so much more annoying for both of us when I hear along the grapevine.
Anyhow, moving along. I have been busy constructing various new pages for the website, which is now quite extensive and comprehensive in scope.
I am waiting for the licensing things to drop through, and patience is not a virtue I have often been attributed with.....
I am however inspired by listening to some old musics, as I think there is a plethora of great stuff there, hidden until now. Mark my words, it is on!

eating. I always forget, which is a constant pain

So I always forget to eat, get cranky and end up having to go to one of two late night spots. Fred 62s is going to have to do right now. I might have to go on my own, as I got caught up making new website stuff.... ;(

Dial a Cliche

I get the feeling that work is consuming me right now..
Craziness is driving me along, but I have not written anything except the ambient album (took 2 days) for ages. Can't even get the strength to finish some things that I love (the most pressing would be Katie's song, I guess)
I think I need a break just at the time when it is not going to come. I don't want to BREAK!
Ok, so just been going through all my old records/videos of all my old bands, and some of which I have lost etc.... I guess I have been doing this a really long time. Makes me think.
Placements is the exciting thing right now, I think. Just signed off on Danny Saber's 2:22 placement with Adamandevil's "Weeds"
Dropped Scott off to play a support to Dhani Harrison at the Key Club, and I guess I was looking for something to do, and got distracted by the Discography idea.
www.impossiblethingsrecords.com/shah/discography.html if you want to look?
Anyhow, Trying to find all the old Whitey artwork etc is not a particuarly good memory, but I guess we move on, and I had a wonderful time some of the time with all the touring...

Birthday thanks

So I am very happy this year. My birthday was amazing, I had a party on the 31st of Dec, or at least I hijacked it as my birthday celebration, and most people that I love in LA came out to that, I was gifted a cornucopia of Prince related presents, and obligatory drinks...
Then a week later, the wonderful Tiki and Jawnee threw a surprise party for me attended by everyone else that had not been able to make the first one.
Amazing really, sure beats sitting in jail like last year!
Los Angeles is full of wonderful people, it is absolutely not a superficial abyss, as is always being represented to us...... I thank all of my cherished friends for making me very happy.
Also, I am working on an incredibly beautiful song with Katie Sippel which could turn out very nice indeed.

Shah album release: Impossible Things records

Shooting Stars and Coito Ergo Sum

I am currently sitting in The Studio D at Wow and Flutter, listening to Shooting Stars (adamandevil) a million times over, as Robert Harder, my good friend over from London mixes the sh*t out of it. It is sounding amazing, and my two favourite Angelenos, Katie Sippel, and Scott Fairbrother are chilling outside in the lounge area.
This place is an amazing spot, used mainly for Post Production movie soundtrack stuff.
Ironically, we have just licensed Shooting Stars for a film that Katie is involved with helping soundtrack. Hence the attention to detail..... The movie is called "Losing You"
Ruth Owen from drinkme is coming to town tomorrow, and she will be pleased to hear for the first time that the movie is also going to feature a song called "Manifesto" that we wrote and recorded together back in the day. Also tomorrow, I have the first rehearsals for the new band (playing the first show at the Key Club on thursday)
Also featuring in the movie from Impossible Things records is "Pay No Mind" by Piel and a couple of instrumentals by my old Xerox project: "Snow" and Hypnotised"
Adamandevil have had "Weeds" used in a movie with Val Kilmer in, called 2:22 or 2:45 or something like that. Appropriately, it is placed in a strip bar scene.
Denise and I designed the press release for Impossible Things' release of my debut album the other day, and I am very very pleased with the way it turned out. Designed for old circus playbills, it looks totally how I envisioned it....
Ulrich has also finished the mastering for the album: "Coito Ergo Sum"- planned for release in early April. I have not heard it yet, as I am keeping my ears for A&E right at this minute, but I will be very excited to hear it when I get home.
I am attempting to revolutionise the presentation of the songs in the live format by incorporating Ableton as part of the backing. Should be interesting......
Anyhow, back to work, as my brain needs to concentrate on things more apposite and at hand. x x x julian x x x
